Portrait miniatures have a longstanding history that goes back to the 15th Century - first appearing on illuminated manuscripts with minimum or red lead used to colour. These were referred to as ‘limnings’ during the 16th and the 17th Centuries in Europe. From the 18th Century onwards, the term 'miniature' came into being.
These small works of art were first seen in European royal courts during the 16th Century. Then becoming quite famous by the 18th Century as well known miniature painters of the time established themselves amongst the elite to create commissioned pieces. Portrait miniatures were sought after pieces by sailors and soldiers alike. Who when leaving their loved ones behind, could gift these tokens of love to cherish in their absence.
Miniatures also served as gifts given at marriage, births or even deaths. By the 18th Century, these were also created as trinkets, often worn on a chain around the neck. Some were set into a bracelet or ring as well - usually ornately made and embellished with jewels.
