Magnificent 10" Marquetry Longcase Clock

Description:

A truly magnificent 17th century Charles II walnut and floral marquetry 8 day longcase clock.  The dial has cherub squandrels, a date aperature and has fine hands.  The clock is signed at the bottom of the 10 inch dial:  John Clowes, Londini, Fecit.  This longcase clock has a rising hood with ebony twist columns.  Beautiful marquetry details of flowers, foliage and a bird in the centre piece.

Maker Bio:

John Clowes was born in 1651 and made a Freeman of the Clockmakers' Company in January 1672 as a 'Great Clockmaker'.  His father, John Clowes Snr, was a nail maker of Odd Rode, Cheshire.  In 1684 he made a clock for King Charles II and in 1708 he was made Assistant to the Company and was made Warden in 1713 but did not take up the post.  Clowes died in 1717.
